Recent engagements include performances with Knoxville Opera in memory of Robert Lyall and the role of Schaunard in La bohème, as well as a return to the role of Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Druid City Opera. Additional appearances include Apollo in Anthony Brandt’s Kassandra with the Turner-Fischer Center for Opera at Louisiana State University; Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Opéra Louisiane; the title role in Rossini’s Maometto II with Teatro Nuovo; the Learned Judge in Trial by Jury with the Turner-Fischer Center for Opera; and Davis Miller in Approaching Ali with Opéra Louisiane. An accomplished interpreter of contemporary opera, Dr. Purcell created the title role in Evan Mack and Joshua McGuire’s Roscoe, which premiered at Seagle Music Colony. His work in modern repertoire also includes appearances as Dauber in Marc Blitzstein’s The Cradle Will Rock with Opera Saratoga, Figaro in John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles with Chautauqua Opera, the title role in Philip Glass’s Orphée, the baritone soloist in Hydrogen Jukebox, and Older Thompson in Tom Cipullo’s Glory Denied. In the standard repertoire, Dr. Purcell has performed a wide range of leading and supporting roles, including Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Annapolis Opera, Dr. Bartolo with Teatro Nuovo, Marcello in La bohème, Peter in Hansel und Gretel, and Ramiro in L’heure espagnole as a resident artist with Tri-Cities Opera. In concert, he has appeared as a soloist in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Philadelphia Orchestra and made his professional debut singing Dandini in La Cenerentola with Palm Beach Opera. Dr. Purcell serves on the faculty of Lehigh University as a Performing Artist Affiliate and is a mentor with ArtSmart Philadelphia. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Louisiana State University and earned both his Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees from Westminster Choir College. He has been a studio artist with Sarasota Opera and Chautauqua Opera and a young artist with Palm Beach Opera and Bel Canto at Caramoor
